Sharp Pelvic Pain During Mid-cycle

The pain that many women feel at mid-cycle is called Mittleschmerze. It is merely the release of the egg from the ovary and is not something to worry about. NSAIDs (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) can often alleviate the pain. Mittleschmerze is usually diagnosed by evaluating family and medical history and ruling out any other possible problems on a routine examination. Ultrasound at the time of mid-cycle is the only way to know for certain, yet this is very time consuming and it is difficult to catch the moment at which the egg is released, making the procedure largely unnecessary.

NSAIDs should be avoided if a woman has any kind of bleeding problems including stomach ulcers. They are a bit irritating to the stomach and should be taken with food. They should not be taken if there is any chance of pregnancy.
